What is a Fractured Vertebrae?
Vertebrae are the round bones that form your spine and a vertebral compression fracture is a break in a part
of the vertebra. Fractures may be mild to severe. A fracture or dislocation of a vertebra can cause bone
fragments to pinch, compress, and damage the spinal nerves or spinal cord.
What Are Common Causes of Fractured Vertebrae?
Fractured vertebrae can be caused by injuries such as car accidents, falls, and sports injuries or caused by
anything that weakens your bones putting you at risk for fractures. You are probably familiar with osteoporosis
which is a condition that causes your bones to become weak and brittle as you age. If you have particularly
brittle bones, you can get fractures by simple actions like bending forward or even a sudden sneeze. Fractures
can also be caused by certain diseases of the spine, such as cancer and infection that can weaken your bones
and make you prone to injury.
Vertebrae Fractures and Social Security Disability
Vertebrae fractures can qualify you for Social Security Disability depending on severity and the likelihood of causing
nerve root compression
as well as the limitations in your ability to lift, sit, and stand.
The nature of the injury can have some impact on the determination as you must be out of work or
be expected to be out of work for at least 12 months and depending on your prognosis the Social Security
Administration (SSA) may expect you to get better before the durational requirements are met.
At Access Disability Advocates, we understand that even after a medical "recovery" you may have ongoing pain
and changes to your quality of life that make it difficult to return to work.
Make an Informed Decision
Have you become disabled because of fractured vertebrae or experiencing chronic back pain? We can help you obtain Social Security
Disability (SSD) and supplemental security income (SSI) benefits due to your injuries. We will consider your entire medical history when assessing your case. For example, people who
suffer from spinal problems may develop depression because of the pain and changes to quality of life.
Should you file a Social Security Disability (SSD) or supplemental security income (SSI) claim because of a
fractured vertebrae? We can give you the information you need to decide. Please
